Wondered the colourful streets of Anafiotika in the morning. Blissfully quiet and devoid of tourists, yet tucked right at the foot of the Acropolis. Loving Athens so far... #thisisathens #moreforless

Breakfast in Athens at cafe, bistrot. Yiasemi. Thick medium sweet Greek coffee with grapes in syrup. They do a fabulous range of pies ( tart with eggplant, feta & basil for eg) for just €5. #thisisathens #moreforless

Great first day in Athens. City has tons to offer in terms of culture, gastronomy & nightlife & beaches are just 30 minutes away: everything you would want in a long weekend break. Plus everything is affordable .Visiting TAF was my highlight of the day. Hidden away in an alleyway in the middle of Monastiraki Flea Market, this renovated old courtyard holds regular art exhibitions plus serves some of the best coffee in Athens. Granted, not uber cheap ( €3.50 for cafe frappe) but the lovely vibe, free arts exhibitions- whole package packs a punch.Definitely, place to visit for your next trip to Athens. #thisisathens #moreforless

Hello from Athens 🙏 I'm at the birthplace of Western civilisation & of the ancient wonders of the world, the Acropolis. We got up early to beat the crowds and the heat and we were rewarded with an almost empty Acropolis and beautiful views like this one: The temple of Athena (goddess of wisdom to whom this city is dedicated )overlooking the city. You can visit the Acropolis and all the ancient sites like the ancient Agora, theatre of Dionysos, Temple of Olympian Zeus for a combined ticket of just €12 and is valid for 4 days. Entrance is free for under 18's , senior citizens and EU students. ( Non EU students pay €6) Really looking forward to exploring this city over the next 3 days, budgettraveller style and sharing with some of the city's secrets. If you have any tips to share of what we should do following the #moreforless theme, please share. #thisisathens

Like the spa? So do we. And we kind of hit it hard today. We snuck in a quick swim and steam at our hotel, the Grand Bretagne. Then this afternoon we headed down to the Athenian Riviera to the Divani Thalasso Spa for yet more pampering. We followed hydrotherapy, steam and sauna sessions with two fantastic treatments. Only problem? They made us fall asleep. We have a love/hate relationship with fab spa treatments that put you to sleep. Love the total relaxation. But hate sleeping through the good bits! #ThisisAthens #luxuryseekers

One of the things we adore about Athens is its history (just read our latest post - link in profile and you'll get a sense of just why). But there's much more to it than meets the eye. It's tempting to see Athens as full of monuments built during Ancient Greece, but there's also Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history in the city. This mix of ancient history is very apparent in this photo - the Erechtheion of Ancient Greece's Acropolis sits on the hill with the ruins of the Roman Agora below. Out of shot is a mosque from the city's Ottoman era. What's perhaps most fascinating is that thousands of locals just wander past them each day without a second thought to their great significance - such is the wealth of history here. Want to see more of Athens? Check out our photos this week on the @this_is_athens account #ThisisAthens #luxuryseekers

We've spent the day seeking out luxury experiences in Athens, from the jewellers and designer shops of Syntagma to Kolonaki with its acacia and olive trees shading us from the autumnal sunshine as we took in its cool cafés. Still we couldn't resist a side trip to Plaka, the historic heart of Athens - and just look at the colour that we found there. We're about to takeover the @this_is_athens account to show you a little of upmarket Kolonaki. And we'll be posting on there a few times this week so go on over and follow the profile to see more from this great city. You can also follow us our discoveries on #ThisisAthens

I have had a lovely evening in Athens with dinner at the @electrahotelsresorts. This is where I'm staying for a few nights and it's great. But the restaurant is worth coming to regardless. Delicious food, lovely staff and.. well.. this view. Need I say more? Who doesn't like the Acropolis served with every course! :) #thisisathens #athens #greece #travel

Love this place! The Acropolis Museum in Athens has a wonderful collection of statues and items from around the ancient monument. What makes it really special to visit is the building design. The top floor is the same size as the Parthenon with the remaining marble art in the same relative positions. Oh, and you can see what remains of the building right out the window. See!! It was really helpful to get a guided tour around the museum with Athens Walking Tours and AFEA. #thisisathens #athens #culturalbuff #greece #travel

One of the best things about living in #Athens is the surprise occurrence of new street art murals. Said to boast the largest collection of street art in all of Europe, the political and social satire is the modern voice of the city, whose hundreds of artists have free reign of expression. The media were all to quick to report on this piece today in the Psirri neighborhood, of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel who look just a little too close. It is the work of Italian Artist Jupiterfab, and a cheeky reference to the famous Berlin Wall artwork of the Soviet Union and GDR leaders kissing. I love the outspoken nature of the city. This is a unique aspect of modern-day culture here. #ThisIsAthens

In the old, revived neighborhood of Psirri in #Athens - once run down and now thriving with hostels and new business ventures - one must not forget the traditional gems that preserve the area's history. Like this Koulouri (round sesame bread rings) store, which is one of the oldest in the neighborhood and still going strong. As much as I am an advocate of artistic regeneration, I love stumbling upon the old. Without it, the new has no context. #ThisIsAthens

Life is a journey.

My "travel journey" started in the early 90's with a year as an exchange student in Australia.

That amazing human experience gave me the taste to travel.

Traveling have awaken my 5 senses and today I'm so curious that no matters the destination as long as I meet people and their culture.

Blue, Greece || I was out today... Out of Athens with @olympiccruises hopping on and off 3 islands : Hydra, Poros and Aegina. My favorite is Hydra... I so so much want to go back there on holiday for a week. no computer, no phone, just my camera and some books. I'm back in Athens now after a great sunset on the boat (and even dolphins that showed-up 🐬) I will never forget that this blue made my day, for sure !!! #outdoorenthusiast #thisisathens

Varkiza - Attic, Greece || As I was driving down to Cape Sounion, I stopped by many coves and beaches. I had lunch there in Varkiza at Kastelorizo, a seafood restaurant situated in front of the fishing port ! Nice and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the center of Athens. #thisisathens #outdoorenthusiast

Cape Sounion, Greece || I had an amazing day driving south of Athens, in the Attic. The greatest part of my day was for sure the sunset at cape Sounion where Poseidon temple is overlooking the sea ! Amazing place to visit only at sunset on a beautiful day #thisisathens #outdoorenthusiastic

Dear Athens, I realise now that I'd got you all wrong. I visited in the height of summer and stumbled (and, ahem, sweated) up your steep hills and into your tavernas, not knowing where to look for authenticity, not knowing where to look for shade. But now, here, in late October and with the gift of local expertise, you look completely different. Younger. Older. More beautiful. More interesting. You have more layers, more stories, more...reasons to fall in love. Unless, of course, you've always been this way. I just needed to know where to look. Well, today erased those errors. And while the computers whir and phones recharge and I have to wait to show you what I want to – please follow along on #thisisathens So you don’t make my mistake. Cheers, Abi

My big fat Greek breakfast: coffee :-) I'm sitting in the cool monochrome cafe at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. Note how the zig zagging ceiling reflects in the coffee - and how my sleeve expertly complements the arrangement. Not down to luck at all that I happen to be wearing a black and white top. Nope, not at all. #thisisathens

Coffee is serious business in Athens. It comes stronger than Spain, often slathered over ice (hey, it's hot here!) - but always, it would seem, with water. Viva Athena! (Or something that would leave me feeling more cultured... ;-) )

One of the best things of going out at night is the lights. The Roman Agora, for example, is one of the most beautiful ancient sights at the footprints of Acropolis. At night it just becomes mythical. Its like the lights atract the spirits of the glorious past, feels like they never left. Athenian nights have soul. #ThisIsAthens #NightOwl #traveldudes #visitgreece

This is where you start the night. The meeting point is Monastiraki square where you can easily get via metro or train from really anywhere in the city and head to Ag.Irini square and around downtown. Walk the vibrant neighbourhoods arount the touristic attractions and find off the beaten path street bars, awarded cocktail bars , and live stages with jazz, groovy DJ sets and swing. The modern side of Athens lives right in the heart of the longest ancient promenade in Europe. #ThisIsAthens #NightOwl #traveldudes
